Open jam session featuring Django Reinhardt / hot club jazz every other Tuesday from 7:00-9:30pm at the Storyville Lounge in Allentown (that’s Pittsburgh’s neighborhood of Allentown, not Allentown, PA). All instruments and vocalists welcome. House piano & double bass available for use (no house drum set provided - drummers please arrive early and bring minimal setups as space is limited).
French-Romani guitar virtuoso Django Reinhardt was Europe’s first jazz superstar, and in the 1930’s founded one of the first all-strings jazz bands, featuring acoustic guitars, violin, and double bass. After the invention of amplification he also began performing with horns and percussion, eventually touring the States as a guest star with the Duke Ellington big band. His Romani roots heavily influenced the sound and style of his Quintette du Hot Club de France and launched a whole new genre of jazz.
The Storyville Lounge is a New Orleans style speakeasy housed inside Dr. Tumblety’s in Allentown, featuring early twentieth century decor and house-distilled spirits.
The session is hosted by Pittsburgh’s premiere hot club jazz ensemble Swing Dynamique, who provide the rhythm section and invite others to join us in studying Djangology! Suggested repertoire, lead sheets, and other material for studying the style are available upon request (use reply email provided to request access).
Performers and audiences welcome. Admission only $7 (admission fee is deductible from bar tab for performers).
Violin / fiddle, guitar, upright bass, clarinet, accordion, and mandolin are very typical instruments in the genre, but saxophone, trumpet, trombone, tuba, drums, piano, and voice are especially welcomed also! All instruments are welcome but these ones are keywords :)
