Here is an A5 mandolin made by the late luthier, John Dickinson (Nevada) in 2003. It has a varnish finish, Rubner tuners, custom ebony with flower pot inlay tailpiece cover, radius bound fretboard and bound ebony headstock. Ebony bridge with bone topped saddle. Strap button is on side of neck heel.
This one is very responsive with a great percussive chop and well as clear and strong noting up and down the fretboard, plenty of volume.
The finish shows player wear, varnish finishes are thin and allow the instrument to resonate well, varnish isn’t as durable as harder finishes. The over all beauty of the instrument shines through any blemishes or player marks.
