None of the trumpets that I sell need any work to be playable. They all have been gone over, been ultra-sonic cleaned and repairs made accordingly. I DON'T SELL ANYTHING THAT DOESN'T PLAY. Prices are based on many factors but mostly on what level of quality the horn is. ( student, intermediate, or pro level) Some older horns were considered a student horn back in the day but are considered an intermediate with today's standards. I sell a lot of Olds Ambassadors which were a student horn 50 years ago but are a high end intermediate today. Many pro players use the Ambassador as a back up horn. Next price factor is cosmetics. If a horn has very few dings and the lacquer is bad, I will strip the old lacquer off, buff the horn, and re-lacquer it or leave it bare brass. Relacquer adds $100 to the horn's price. The result is a brand new looking horn that looks great and plays great. If there are too many unsightly dents I will sell the horn as-is which reduces the price by about $100. It will play just as good as the previous horn but isn't as appealing to the eye. And then there is the prestine horn, which are very scarce. This horn is 50+ years old and sat in a closet most of it's life. These horns bring much more money, being all original. Expect to pay much more for this one. Of course each horn will be priced on an individual basis.
Here is a general breakdown of prices:
$125= Good player, bad finish, unsightly dents, unsightly case and mouthpiece. E-bay price= $200
$175 - $200 = Good player, new lacquer or bare brass, some small dings, beautiful from 10 ft. away, case and MP. E-bay = $500 +
$300 + = Good player, original unmolested, like new condition, very little blemishes, very limited use, original like new case and MP. E-bay = $900 +
This applies to all horns ,Student, Intermediate, and Professional level. I hope this sheds some light on what I sell. As you can see, I have something for everyone. All price ranges, all good playing condition
