1949 249 Indian Scout. 440 CC 2 cylinder engine nicknamed "Vertical". 4 speed transmission.
Matching factory stamped frame and engine numbers. Built in Springfield MA like all other Indians to 1953.
a lot of originality as far as these models go. Purchased June 1, 1949 at Pratts Indian in Wichita KS. Documentation back to original purchase. Many pages of pocket notebook documentation for expenses including gas and oil during first ownership.
Original paint on fenders, tank, and frame. Paint on lower front forks is not original due to previous repair. Has its rare original impossible to find mufflers. Original L&L Linkert model S carburetor and air intake.
Top end rebuilt with piston modification for oil ring. New valve guides and valve grind.
Bike starts easy, runs, and stops as it should. Magneto has been rebuilt, Wheels were gone through, spokes repaired and trued, new rim strips, tubes and tires.
Not sure of charging system functionality. Charging/battery system is for lights and horn which all work. Magento is for ignition.
Has passenger foot pegs as at one time original owner had a buddy seat on it.
Had oil pump modification done to minimize sumping. Also had sump plug modification for better flow. Installed small ΒΌ turn valve on oil line to 100% prevent sumping during long storage.
Gas tank is clean, never coated.
Under the rear fender tip is an original decal from Pratts Indian Sales.
I have a short video available of it starting and running.
