Here's a still unused 27" steel-rimmed vintage wheelset from France, and possibly the best of its kind.
Many positives and one (cosmetic) negative.....
THE NEGATIVE: The non-brakewall area of the rims where the spokes insert) once had surfae rust spots. Those spots have been cleaned away but much distressed chrome plating remains as seen in the images: not a structural issue by any means but a real cosmetic downside.
I attempt in the gallery to show a sample of the worst of it, which is on the rear wheel, and heavier on about half. The front wheel, by comparison, actually looks fairly nice from a normal viewing range having only well-spaced, smaller, fainter spots. With the tires removed some light surface rust is also present to either side of the rim strip but again, not an structural issue: just cosmetic. There are also a few tool marks and dings and rear's brake wall have a few faint spots, but in general the brake wall surfaces of both rims have never rusted.
-This NOS 27" vintage wheelset is trued up perfectly, both radially and axially, with no seized nipples encountered along the way. (Did you know? Steel rimmed wheels true more readily than alloy ones and stay true longer.)
-Included are Brand New 90 psi Kenda 27 x 1 1/4" tires (w/tubes).
-The rims in question are special: Rigida "Superchromix" 27 x 1 1/4, which feature a deeply crosshatched sidewall for effective braking even in wet conditions. Note that those sidewalls have yet to have a brake pad contact them and are very fine looking, with the front virtually flawless.
-The hubs are NOS Normany large flange alloy 36 spoke. They are in excellent condition overall, though begging to be polished. They are pretty much untouched except by a little dust, and their sheen appears only slightly-normally-dulled from age. They are in fine adjustment, newly lubed, and ready to roll. Rear spacing is 126mm and the hubs freewheel threads are the less common French size.
-The spokes are also dull and have some tarnished surface but still basically smooth and never "caught" the rust that afflicted the rims.
-The QR skewers are a matched pair from Atom, a seminal French company closely associated with Normandy and therefore very appropriate to the set. They too are in very good condition.
Please study the image gallery to best appreciate.
Perhaps the best 27" steel-rimmed wheelset you will find (certainly at this price), with a real cosmetic downside, but totally refurbished and ready to roll.
Still awaiting a maiden voyage. Hubs with skewers and tires alone are worth the price of admission.
