Youth Emotional & Social Development Study (YES-D):

This research study, which is located at the University of Pittsburgh, will help us learn more about how children with depression between the ages of 9 and 17 process social and emotional information. Information gathered from research studies like this one might help in the development of better treatments for children with mental health problems.

To qualify, you must be a mother of a child who is between the ages of 9 and 17 who:

• Is currently experiencing symptoms of depression
(i.e. sadness/tearfulness, irritability, fatigue, lack of enjoyment in activities)

OR

• Has never experienced problems with emotional health

This research study does not involve medications or treatment, but referrals for treatment are provided when appropriate.

What the study involves:

This research study involves one laboratory visit of about 3.5 to 4 hours, a functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) scan to measure brain activity and 3 weekends in which the child will receive telephone calls. Procedures include:

• Questionnaires and interviews for you and your child

• Your child will complete computer tasks during an fMRI scan while his/her eye movements are measured by a computer program. An fMRI scan involves a magnet taking pictures of the blood flow in the child’s brain.

• Your child will receive telephone calls for 3 extended weekends on a cell phone provided by the research study. Each call will last about 5 minutes and will involve the researcher asking the child questions about what he/she is doing and how he/she is feeling.

Children will be compensated up to $210 for their participation in this research study and mothers will be compensated up to $60 for their participation.
