Researchers in the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Pittsburgh are conducting a preliminary study to determine the effect of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) in increasing thigh muscle size and strength in older adults. Individuals between 65-80 years of age can participate in this research study if they can independently ambulate without assistive devices. In addition, individuals with history of the following conditions cannot participate:
• Cardiovascular disease
• Uncontrolled high blood pressure
• Rupture to the quadriceps or patellar tendon
• Muscle disease such as muscular dystrophy
• Neurological disease such as stroke, peripheral neuropathy, Parkinson’s disease, or multiple sclerosis
• Diagnosis of inflammatory arthritis (Rheumatoid arthritis, gout, or psoriatic arthritis)
• Currently been participating in a regular exercise program more than 1x/week
• Been using anticoagulants and platelet inhibitors
• History of chronic and significant respiratory disease or shortness of breath
• One coritco-steroid injection to the quadriceps or patellar tendon in the past month or 3 within the past year

Participation in this study requires you to attend three pre-training testing sessions, then training sessions for 3 months, then three post-training testing sessions. You will be reimbursed $50 for each testing session for a total of $300 if you attend all testing sessions before and after the training period for your time and travel. The parking for testing and training sessions will be covered. After the testing sessions, you will receive a 3 month strength training program at no cost.

If you would like further information concerning this study, you can contact Ibrahim Altubasi at (412) 648-2215. We hope that you will consider participating in the study. Participation in this research study is voluntary.
