This position is a 12-month (renewable), non-tenure-stream, visiting faculty-level appointment at 100% effort.  Responsibilities of the Outreach Coordinator are dedicated to maintaining and advancing the Outreach Program of the Department of Biological Sciences.  The goal of the Outreach Program is to bridge the gap between the science community and K-12 teachers and students.  Our Outreach Programs take advantage of the vast reservoir of advanced biological knowledge in our academic community, and we work directly with local high school biology teachers to make that knowledge accessible, design curricula for classroom integration, and enhance K-12 science education.   The Outreach Coordinator reports directly to the Director of Outreach Programs. <br>

This position is funded by an external grant to the Department of Biological Sciences.<br>

Qualifications:  An MS or Ph.D.  in one of the biological sciences is required. Education degree or experience is neither necessary nor sufficient for this position.  Strong background in molecular biology concepts and laboratory techniques is required. Must have a driver’s license. <br>
<br>
Responsible for Pitt-Kits program during academic year<br>
Duties are focused on maintaining a fully-functional Outreach Program which aims to serve local schools by providing educational programs that bridge current science content with required Pennsylvania academic standards.  This involves traveling to schools and working with participating teachers to refine and implement novel classroom curriculum.  These visits may be with or without the mobile lab, or may occur as school field trips to our University lab.<br>
Duties include:<br>

Work with Director of Outreach Programs to refine and update classroom modules<br>

Summer Programs<br>

The University of Pittsburgh is looking for a Research Specialist to generate gene modified transgenic animals as mouse models of human disease for Transgenic and Gene Targeting (TGT) facility. The position involves complex micromanipulations of pre-implantation embryos and surgical procedures to implant embryos into recipient mothers, tissue isolations from gene modified animals and also advanced level of work using mice and culture of mouse embryonic stem (ES) cell lines. Duties include, managing mouse colony, growing and manipulating ES cells in culture, under supervision, independently perform all aspects of producing transgenic and gene targeted mice by microinjection of DNA into the nuclei of single cells and microinjection of ES cells into mouse embryos. Performing extensive molecular biology assays on mouse tissues and gene modified cells. The daily responsibilities will include superovulation of mice, isolation of zygotes and blastocysts from live mice, culture and of propagation of embryonic stem cells, microinjection of DNA or embryonic stem cells into embryos and managing the recipient mothers. Additional duties will include training the scientists and other laboratory personnel. Excellent analytical skills are required to maintain and analyze data for breeding and assessment of ES cell clones. The candidate will also perform laboratory maintenance, ordering as well as ensuring a safe working environment through application of IACUC, chemical hygiene and biosafety protocols. Excellent communication skills are required in order to interface effectively with director and core laboratory clients. Masters' degree preferred in Biological sciences or significant relevant experience may be substituted for education. 3-5 years related lab experience as well as proven expertise in handling of rodents and cell culture skills. Experience with micromanipulation of embryos and embryonic stem cells is preferable. Experience in handling rodents, knowledge of different mouse strains, knowledge of cell culture and molecular biology techniques.<br>

The incumbent to this position will work as advanced Proteomics Core Laboratory research staff and will be responsible for processes and analyses using fourier transform ion cyclotron mass spectrometry (FTICR) and time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectrometry using collision induced dissociation and complementary fragmentation methods, infrared multiphoton dissociation and electron capture dissociation, for peptide and protein analyses. This will require experimental design and interpretation of data for qualitative and quantitative proteomic analysis. The incumbent will assess process development needs with the manager and customer, then work independently to develop the processes for sample preparation including iTRAQ chemistry, LC separations strategies and mass spectrometry. Development of these complex processes will require the incumbent to be able to work independently to solve problems and also act effectively as part of the Core Laboratory team. Ability to design methods with reference to source peer reviewed articles is also required so the incumbent should be abreast of current proteomic and mass spectrometry literature. Experience in performing mass spectrometry for protein identification is a requirement of this position. The incumbent will assist with training and evaluation of other Research Specialists as appropriate. Exceptional troubleshooting and customer service skills are essential for the GPCL fee-for-service operation. The proteomics core laboratory has a wide range of instrumentation, including a fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer, a quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer, a 3D ion trap mass spectrometer and time-of-flight mass spectrometers with nano and capillary LC systems. M.S. required in Chemistry, Biochemistry or related field with at least 1 year of postgraduate laboratory experience. PhD preferred. In exceptional circumstances will consider BS with proteomics lab experience of 8 years. Four years chemistry or biochemistry laboratory experience with mass spectrometry is required, of which two years are in a protein laboratory a plus.<br>

(4)    Be literate in adjacent analytical techniques (SEM, XRF, XPS) so that we can fully utilize our client's  assets. <br>

Individual will travel for two weeks and then work inside for two weeks.<br>

Set-up, operate, maintain, collect data, and tear down a portable water treatment plant at remote locations<br>
<br>
Spend time on the shop floor, interacting with employees engaged in the manufacturing process.<br>
• Conduct water treatment projects in an efficient and timely manner.<br>
• Consolidate project data and compile project reports.<br>
• Interact with end users and consulting engineers to complete project objectives and relay testing data.<br>
• Provide start-up services for  product line.<br>
• Provide training to operators for product line.<br>
• Have a working knowledge of Headworks equipment to include Progressing Cavity Pumps, Rotary Screens and Filter Belt Presses.<br>
• Provide mechanical troubleshooting in the field to Contra Shear product line.<br>
• Provide training to operators for Contra Shear product line.<br>
